Nadia Browne age 14, this time collected her prize for winning in the 14 to 16 category, the 13th OECS Essay Competition, hosted and sponsored by the ECCB, while Maria Figueroa who was singled out for special mention for being the best in the 17 to 19 category on island received a certificate.
The Competition is designed to allow students to demonstrate their creativity and critical thinking skills through various genres including essay writing, poetry, song writing and arts. It is open to students aged 13-19 in the eight ECCB member countries. This year, the competition will focus on essay writing.
The ICCB-ECCB Student Awards Competition took place on Monday 3 August. Finalists presented their talks in front of a panel of six judges in 15-minute increments. Each talk included a three-minute question and answer round with the judges.
The 2013 Essay Competition saw another dip in entries (113 this year, 226 in 2012, 304 in 2011) and fewer schools took part in comparison with 2012. The vast majority of candidates were in Year 9 though there was a small number from candidates in Year 8 and below, and we would remind teachers that younger candidates are very welcome to enter.
